Event Name: Rugged Mobile OutlookListen Now!
Overview:The rugged mobile market followed up a strong 2010 with another strong performance in 2011. Demand was especially strong for rugged handheld and tablet form factors. For handhelds the key themes in 2011 was strong demand from the transportation/logistics sector as well as the EMEA regional market. Conversely, demand in North America slowed in the second half of the year, due, in part, to weakening retail opportunities. Our handheld market outlook for the nearterm is for vendor revenues to grow in the mid to high single digits. The rugged tablet market showed resilience in the face of continued attention directed towards consumer media pads and more specifically Apple’s iPad. Demand for tablets was concentrated around traditional inspection, delivery, healthcare and military markets. Several vendors launched or are in the process of releasing rugged Android powered tablets. While demand is beginning to percolate for these devices, we are seeing pent up opportunities for Microsoft’s pending Windows 8 platform. The rugged notebook market has performed less predictably over the course of 2011 as government budgets – both national/federal and state/local – contract. As a result shipments to the commercial sector as a percent of overall shipments increased substantially during the second half of 2011. During this QuickCast, VDC's David Krebs gives an overview of the rugged mobile market, focusing on some of the key trends we believe will be driving change moving forward.

Workers are becoming untethered as access to real-time content is enabling them to act in a more fluid manner. During this QuickCast, VDC's David Krebs talks about some of the key trends surrounding the global mobile workforce, specifically how mobile devices are being used and what that means for the future of the market.

Excerpt:Today’s workforce is undergoing some significant changes, and mobile workers are at the epicenter of many of them. In VDC’s most recent report, we project that the mobile workforce will grow to 1.2 billion workers by 2014 – or roughly one third of today’s workforce. No other workforce segment is as large or growing at the same rate. The segment spans virtually every industry and organization size.

Document Title: Making Dollars & Sense in Today’s NFC Market
Publication Date:February 2012
Excerpt: NFC’s success and profitability is often discussed exclusively in the context of contactless payment (and the handsome transaction fees it could generate) within retail and other B2C merchants. Such a narrow-minded perspective is dangerous, however, as NFC enables a host of other consumer-facing applications, many of which VDC believes will precede broad deployment of contactless payment. While we do recognize contactless payment presents compelling revenue potential, other smart marketing applications will drive adoption of B2C solutions, with contactless payment following shortly thereafter.

Document Title: Predictions for Enterprise Mobile Software in 2012
Publication Date:January 2012
Excerpt:We are in the early days of a mobile computing cycle that was ushered in with the advent of touchscreen smartphones, which not only feature powerful computing capabilities and intuitive user interfaces, but most importantly have a burgeoning apps ecosystem. While the term “consumerization of IT” is regularly utilized to describe the device proliferation that is occurring in business settings, 2011 was the coming out party for the BYOD (bring your own device) acronym. BYOD has not only extended the virtual boundaries of the enterprise, but it has blurred the lines between “home” and “office” and has opened up new opportunities for customer-facing activities. Even though this mobile computing cycle is just getting started, the associated mobile software market will be forced to grow up very quickly in 2012 and may experience some growing pains along the way. Determining the scenarios for these engagements and developing software to streamline the associated workflows will continue to be a key to success for many participants in the mobile ecosystem.

Clearly the market has evolved from a niche point solution to a mainstream segment of the IT landscape. There were numerous developments in enterprise mobility that defined 2011 – including: Motorola landing a large managed services contract with Sears, Lowes deploying over 40K iPhones for their store associates, the introduction of the first rugged Android-powered tablets, and mobile point of sale (POS) gaining momentum. 2012 promises to be just as dynamic.

Document Title: Can the FDA Regulate Mobile Device / Applications Without Stifling Innovation and R&D Spend?
Publication Date:December 2011
Excerpt:The increasing number of smartphones and media tablets deployed in health care environments, has resulted in an influx of mobile apps targeted for patients and health care professionals. While the success of Apple’s iPad is the main driver for tablet deployments in the industry, multiple mobile OSes for smartphones and tablets have also flooded the market. Based on an end-user study that we fielded in 2011, 36.9% of health care respondents stated that their organization had evaluated and decided to deploy media tablets, with an additional 42.3% planning to evaluate in the future. As a result of the rapid mobile device proliferation occurring in the health care industry, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently proposed a draft guidance to regulate mobile medical apps.

Document Title: CHANGING END-USER REQUIREMENTS ARE FORCING FIELD MOBILITY SOLUTION PROVIDERS TO INVEST IN CUSTOMER ENGAGEMENT
Publication Date:October 2011
Excerpt:Mobile computing solutions have long been deployed, and are relied heavily upon by field service and sales organizations to improve productivity, enhance decision making and achieve real-time visibility. However, VDC Research’s most recent end-user study (fielded in Q2 2011) highlights an increasing interest in enabling customer engagement in field mobility among organizations of all sizes. In a market that reached $14 billion in 2010, and with the current outlook suggesting the market will grow to $23 billion by 2015, VDC believes the growing interest in brand loyalty and how it translates into increased revenues among solution providers is significant. The advancements in technology, in combination with the availability of mobile computing solutions at a lower cost, have fueled the adoption of enterprise mobility solutions in field mobile organizations. Companies are making significant investments to improve customer service in order to gain a competitive advantage.

Document Title: THE EMERGENCE OF THE BUSINESS-TO-EMPLOYEE APP STORE
Publication Date:September 2011
Excerpt:VDC Research’s Mobile & Wireless practice recently conducted fieldwork (in July 2011) to gauge important trends in mobile software development. Fifty-nine percent of the developers surveyed indicated that the app store model – with its recurring and predictable revenue streams – is their go-to business model for distributing mobile applications. While businesses are still in the early stages of formulating mobile strategies, we believe that once they are fully formed, business-to-employee (B2E) app stores will naturally and quickly become a ‘must have’ feature on corporate intranets and as native apps on mobile devices for organizations of all sizes.
